Fashion designer Patrick Robinson has resigned from his post as creative director at apparel maker Perry Ellis International after months of friction.

Robinson was employed by Perry Ellis in April 2003 to revitalise its ladies' wear collection.

However, he soon became embroiled in a conflict with the Public Clothing Co, which produced his women's line under license, over the style of the range.

Perry Ellis finally offered to hire the director directly in order for him to produce a more expensive collection under the Perry Ellis name, but a final deal failed to be negotiated.

Robinson began his career at the Anne Klein label and went on launch his own label in 1997.

According to fashion magazine Vogue, Robinson is now moving to a Paris-based fashion house.
