Phoenix Footwear Group Inc on Friday announced the completion of its acquisition of outdoor clothing and travel apparel company Royal Robbins Inc.

The California-based firm said the completion marks its entry into the men's and women's apparel category and means it is now a full-scale men's and women's footwear and apparel company with an emphasis on classic, comfortable footwear and outerwear brands.

Chairman and CEO, James Riedman, said in a statement: "With the completion of this transaction we would add a well-known, quality line of outerwear and apparel to the Phoenix Footwear portfolio of brands.

"As we integrate operations, we believe the sales and distribution synergies that we expect to be created will allow us to expand the Royal Robbins brand, and provide us with a significant new growth vehicle in 2004.

"Looking ahead, we plan to continue pursuing similar acquisitions to complement our current line of footwear and apparel brands, thus enhancing profitability and maximising shareholder value."

Last month, Phoenix said it will pay $6 million in cash and $500,000 in common stock at close, and a contingent payment of around $5m based on a two-year earn-out formula for the firm founded in 1968 by outdoor enthusiasts Royal and Liz Robbins.
