Shoe maker Phoenix Footwear Group slumped to a fourth-quarter net loss of $624,000 after posting a net income of $108,000 in the same period of 2003.

However, the company also reported an 83 per cent rise in sales to $20.7 million for the fourth quarter of 2004, up from $11.3m in the same period of 2003.

For the full year ended 1 January 2005, sales rose 95 per cent to $76.4m compared to $39.1m in 2003.

Full-year net income totalled $3.0m compared to income of $941,000 in 2003.

James Riedman, the company's chairman, said the company doubled in size in 2004.

He added that  it was "disappointed" with its sales results, especially at its Altama and Trotters units, but was "actively managing these brands to improve their results through investments in new products and increased sales support".

Phoenix Footwear Group Inc based in Carlsbad, California, designs, develops and markets men's and women's footwear and apparel under brands including Trotters, SoftWalk, HS Trask, Altama, Ducks Unlimited and Royal Robbins.
