The two candidates left in the battle for head of the World Trade Organisation, Pascal Lamy of France and Carlos Perez del Castillo of Uruguay, have warned the US and EU that placing safeguard restrictions on Chinese exports would be hypocritical, according to UK newspaper Financial Times.

The two are reported to have said, in individual interviews, that western nations' protests against the surge in Chinese exports after WTO quotas ended are unfounded, as they have had ten years to anticipate and prepare for the effects of free trade.

Lamy, an ex-EU trade commissioner, said that the rules had been clearly set and that politicians who denied this were hypocritical or had a bad memory, while del Castillo said that emergency restrictions were not the option he backed.
