The following is a general roundup of US apparel and shoe chains' January 2009 sales results. The list will be updated as new results become available.

Aeropostale posted a 13% hike in total sales for the four-weeks to 31 January to US$96.6m, compared with the same period last year. The mall-based retailer of apparel for young men and women said same-store sales increased 11%, versus a rise of 5% in the year-ago period.

Value priced women's apparel retailer The Cato Corporation reported sales of $52.4m for the four weeks as compared to January last year, a decrease of 7%. Same-store sales for the month fell 10% from last year.

Luxury retailer Nordstrom said its sales were down 3.7% to $468m for the four-week period. Same-store sales for January dropped 11.4%.

Ross Stores reported a 4% increase in sales for the four weeks ended 31 January, to $365m. Same-store sales fell 2%.

Clothing chain Chico's posted a 2.9% drop in its January sales to $91.4m. Same-store sales were down 10.9%.

Branded apparel chain The Bon-Ton Stores said its same-store sales were down 8.2% compared with the prior year period. Total sales slipped 8.3% to $172.0m.

January sales at fashion retailer Dillard's were $376.6m, down 13% on the same period last year. Sales in comparable stores fell 12% in the four-week period.

Department store chain Macy's saw its total sales tumble 4.7% to $1.213bn. On a same-store basis, the company's sales were down 4.5% for the month.

JC Penney said sales in January fell 15.5% to $983m, from $1.16bn in the prior year period. Same-store sales fell 16.4%, the company reported.

Department store chain Kohl's Corporation posted a 9.0% drop in total sales for January. On a same-store basis, sales dropped 13.4%.

Saks Incorporated said that owned sales totaled $147.1m for the four weeks ended 31 January, compared to $190.3m for the same period last year - a 22.7% decrease. Comparable store sales decreased 23.7% for the month.

Off-price retailer The TJX Companies saw sales down 6% to $1.0bn, from $1.1bn a year ago. Comparable store sales fell 4% compared to a 1% increase last year.

Retail giant Wal-Mart Stores posted net sales of $27.742bn for the month of January, a 1.8% increase on January last year. Same-store sales for the month were up 6.2%.

Supermarket retailer Target Corporation reported  sales for the four weeks up 0.8% to $4.138bn. January comparable-store sales declined 3.3%.

Clothing firm American Apparel said January sales at stores open for more than 12 months increased 2% over the year-ago period - with same-store sales soaring by 40%.

Maternity wear retailerDestination Maternity announced that its January net sales increased 0.4% to $38.8m from $38.7m last time. Same-store sales were up 5.1% on a reported basis and rose 1.1% after adjusting for a calendar shift.

Shoe chain Bakers Footwear said January sales increased 2.0% to $11.9m, compared to $11.6m in the same period last year. Same-store sales rose 4.2% compared to a decrease of 9.6% last year.

The Children's Place Retail Stores posted net sales of $80.3m for the four weeks to 31 January, a decrease of 3%. Same-store sales were down 11% versus a 9% increase a year ago.

Victoria's Secret operator Limited Brands reported a same-store sales decline of 9% for January. Net sales fell 5.5% to $591.6m for the four weeks, from $625.8m last year.

The Buckle said its monthly same-store sales increased 14.7%. Total sales were up 23.1% to $48.0m, from $39.0m last time.

Activewear firm Pacific Sunwear of California reported that total PacSun sales in January fell 8% to $54.7m, from $59.6m during the same period last year. Same-store sales dropped 11%.

Stein Mart's total sales were down 17.2% to $67.1m for the month, while its comparable store sales slipped 16.7%.

Gap Inc reported net sales of $757m for the four weeks to 31 January, a drop of 19% compared with the same period last year. The company's comparable store sales for tumbled 23% compared with a 2% decrease a year earlier.

American Eagle Outfitters said its total sales decreased 15% to $138.9m, from $163.9m last year. Same-store sales dropped 22% for the month.

Fashion chain Abercrombie & Fitch reported net sales of $191.5m for the four-week period, a 13% decrease. Same-store sales fell 20%, it said.

Total sales at Stage Stores fell 9.4% to $74.4m, down from $82.1m in the prior year period. Comparable store sales for the month decreased 13.1%, versus an increase of 1.0% last year.

Young fashion firm Hot Topic said its total January sales were up 6% to $44.8m, while same-store sales fell 3.6%.

Meanwhile, at specialty apparel retailer Zumiez, January same-store sales fell 14.8%. Total net sales for the four-week period decreased 2% to $20.3m.
