The following is a general round-up of apparel and shoe chains' June sales results which have been released over the past few days. The list will be updated as new results become available.

Clothing retailer Abercrombie & Fitch reported net sales of $146.1 million for the five-week period ended 3 July 2004, a 13 per cent increase over last year's June sales of $129.5 million. Comparable store sales decreased 5 per cent. Year-to-date, the company reported a net sales increase of 18 per cent to $669.5 million from $569.3 million last year. Comparable store sales declined 1 per cent for the year-to-date period.

Limited Brands today said same-store sales increased 19 per cent for the five weeks to 3 July 2004. Net sales were $994.1 million compared to sales of $832.8 million last year. The company reported a comparable store sales increase of 10 per cent for the 22 weeks to 3 July. Net sales were $3.614 billion, an increase of 10 per cent on last year's $3.293 billion.

The Children's Place Retail Stores Inc announced sales of $71.5 million for the five-week period ended 3 July 2004, a 17 per cent increase compared to sales of $61.0 million reported for June 2003. Same-store sales for the five-week period increased 9 per cent, up from a 3 per cent increase in the prior year period.

Aeropostale Inc posted a 51.6 per cent increase in total net sales for the five-week period ended 3 July 2004 to $69.6 million, compared to $45.9 million for the same period of 2003. Comparable store sales increased 21.3 per cent for the month, against an increase of 8.7 per cent a year ago. Year-to-date, total net sales have increased 51.3 per cent to $291.4 million, up from $192.6 million a year ago.

Men's Wearhouse said June sales were up 9.9 per cent and that US same-store sales increased 6.7 per cent during the same period. Net sales for the five weeks ended 3 July were $151.8 million compared to $138.1 million in the year-ago period.

 Payless ShoeSource Inc reported that same-store sales decreased 1.0 per cent during the five weeks ended 3 July 2004. Company sales totalled $289.2 million, a 0.7 per cent decrease from $291.3 million during fiscal June of last year. Same-store sales increased 2.1 per cent during the first five months of the fiscal year.

Women's clothing retailer Cato Corp posted a 1 per cent increase in sales to $72.1 million for the five weeks ended 3 July. Same-store sales declined 5 per cent during the period. Its year-to-date sales rose 5 per cent to $346.8 million from $331.5 million.

AnnTaylor Stores Corp said same-stores sales in June increased 11.9 per cent, boosted by sales at its AnnTaylor Loft unit and promotions at its Ann Taylor division. The New York clothing retailer said total sales in the five weeks ended 3 July reached $173.3 million, up 27.1 per cent from a year earlier.

Gymboree Corp's June sales climbed 3 per cent to $42.1 million from $40.9 million last year. Same-store sales fell 4 per cent.

Off-price apparel retailer The TJX Companies Inc said sales for the five-week period ended 3 July 2004 were $1.3 billion, up 10 per cent over the $1.2 billion achieved during the same period in 2003. For the 22 weeks ended 3 July sales reached $5.8 billion, a 15 per cent increase over last year's $5.0 billion. Consolidated comparable store sales for the five-week period increased 2 per cent over last year.

Deb Shops Inc, which sells juniors clothing and accessories, reported a 4.5 per cent fall in June same-store sales. Total sales for the month dropped 4.4 per cent to $23.1 million.

The Buckle Inc announced today that sales for the five-week period ended 3 July increased 16.9 per cent to $34.7 million from sales of $29.7 million in the corresponding five-week period ended July 5, 2003. Comparable store sales, for stores open at least one year, increased 10.3 per cent over last year. Net sales year-to-date, for the 22 weeks ended 3 July 2004 increased 16.0 per cent to $156.8 million from $135.2 million for the corresponding 22 weeks in the prior year.

Private-label women's clothing Chico's FAS Inc reported a 42 per cent increase in June sales to $93.6 million from $65.9 million. Comparable store sales increased 10.9 per cent for the five-week period ended 3 July 2004. For the 22 weeks total sales increased 49.5 per cent to $440 million from $295 million for the same period a year ago. Same-store sales were up 17.6 per cent for the 22-week period.

Specialty clothing retailer Talbots Inc posted a 0.9 per cent rise in sales at stores open at least a year. Total sales increased 7 per cent to $184.6 million from $173.2 million for the five week period ended 5 July. Year-to-date sales for the 22 weeks increased 7 per cent to $731.2 million from $684.1 million. Comparable year-to-date store sales increased 2.5 per cent.

Pacific Sunwear of California Inc said total sales for the five weeks of June were $105.2 million, an increase of 17.4 per cent over last year's $89.6 million. Company same store sales increased 7.0 per cent with PacSun same store sales up 7.5 per cent and d.e.m.o. same store sales up 1.5 per cent.

Specialty retailer The Wet Seal Inc reported net sales from continuing operations, excluding the discontinued Zutopia division, for the five week period ended 3 July 2004 of $39.9 million, compared with net sales of $45.8 million for the same period last year. Comparable store sales for continuing operations declined 10.1 per cent during June, compared to a decline of 21.7 per cent in the same period a year ago.

Women's plus-size apparel chain Charming Shoppes Inc reported that total sales for the five weeks to 3 July decreased 1 per cent to $232.4 million from $235.6 million for the same period in 2003. Same-store sales fell 2 per cent for the period.

Nordstrom Inc said preliminary June sales were $707.4 million, an increase of 8.5 per cent compared to sales of $652.0 million for the five-week period ending 5 July 2003. Same-store sales increased 5.7 per cent. June same-store sales in full-line stores increased in all geographic regions and all major merchandise categories except women's active wear, kids' apparel and women's special sizes the company said.

Fashion retailer Deb Shops Inc reported a 4.5 per cent drop in same-store sales for the month ended 30 June 2004. Total sales decreased 4.4 per cent to $23.1 million from $24.1 million.

Goody's Family Clothing Inc said total sales for fiscal June were $105.3 million, a decrease of 0.4 per cent from total sales of $105.7 million in June 2003. Comparable store sales for June 2004 decreased 3.2 per cent from June 2003.

United Retail Group Inc, which sells large-size women's fashion apparel, footwear and accessories, announced total sales of $37.9 million in June 2004. This compared to $40.6 million during June last year. Comparable store sales declined 5 per cent for the month. Total sales for the quarter-to-date were $73.9 million, down from $77.5 million last time.
