The following is a general roundup of apparel and shoe chains' May 2007 sales results. The list will be updated as new results become available.

Department store operator The Bon-Ton Stores experienced a rebound in sales for May, saying that its same-store sales picked up 1.2% in the four weeks ended 2 June. On a net basis, sales were up 1% to US$234.7m, from $232.3m a year ago.

Fashion firm American Eagle Outfitters logged a 5% increase in same-store sales for the month, and posted an 18% increase in net sales during the four weeks ended 2 June, growing to $199.2m from $168.8m in May 2006.

Mall-based retailer Cache announced that same-store sales decreased 2% during May 2007, while total net sales for the four-week period decreased 3.5% to $21.9m.

Zumiez, a retailer of action sports related apparel, footwear, equipment and accessories, said that total net sales for May increased 51.6% to $22.7m. Same-store sales at the company increased 11.2% for the four-week period compared to May last year.

Youth apparel chain Hot Topic posted a 2% decrease in monthly sales to $45.1m, and said that same-store sales during May fell by 6.1% compared to last year.

Discount fashion retailer Ross Stores reported sales of $450m for the month of May, a 9% increase over the same four weeks in 2006. Same-store sales for the period increased 1% compared to last year.

Fashion chain Abercrombie & Fitch has reported net sales of $215.0m for the month of May, a 16% increase over this time last year. May same-store sales decreased 5% year-on-year.

High street chain Gap reported net sales of $1.19bn for the month of May 2007, which represented a 2% increase compared with net sales of $1.16bn for the same month last year. The company's same-store sales for May decreased 3% for the four-week period.

Women's wear retailer AnnTaylor Stores said that net sales increased 1.6% to $221.1m in May, compared with net sales of $217.6m for the same four-week period last year. Same-store sales for the May 2007 period decreased 4.6%, the firm reported.

Female fashion apparel firm The Cato Corporation has reported sales of $75.9m for the four weeks of May 2007, a 3% increase over May 2006. Same-store sales at Cato increased 2% for the month.

Junior apparel company Deb Shops said that same-store sales increased 0.2% for the month and that total sales increased 3.4% to $28.4m from $27.4m for May last year.

Women's clothing company Christopher & Banks reported total sales of $50.7m for the four-week period in May, while same-store sales for the four weeks increased 4% compared with last year.
 
Fashion retailer Stein Mart reported that net sales in May fell 0.6% to $118.9m compared to the same month last year. Same-store sales, meanwhile, increased 2.5% over the same duration.

Department store retailer Kohl's Corporation said that sales in the four-week period increased 18.5% over the monthly period in May 2006. On a same-store basis, sales increased 10.5%.

Store operator Nordstrom reported preliminary sales of $637.8m for the four-week May period, an increase of 6.1%. Same-store sales increased 6.3% compared to May 2006.

Private brand retailer Chico's said that its May sales increased 10.2% to $155.0m for the four-week period of May. Same-store sales decreased 2.9% for the four-week of June, compared to the same four-week period last year.

Victoria's Secret owner Limited Brands posted same-store sales up 2% for May, compared to the four weeks period in 2006. The company reported net sales of $774.7m for the four weeks - compared to sales of $719.4m for May 2006.

Maternity apparel retailer Mothers Work announced that net sales for the month of May 2007 decreased 4.0% to $54.1m. The decrease in sales versus last year resulted primarily from a decrease in same-store sales, which fell 3.6% compared to May 2006.

Men's tailored and casual wear retailer JoS A Bank Clothiers said that its total net sales for the month increased 23.4% to $45.3m, while same-store sales gained 13.5% in fiscal May 2007, as compared with last year.

Stage Stores reported that its total sales for the four-week May period increased 9.8% to $116.6m, compared to the same month last year, while same-store sales increased 1.7% versus an increase of 4.0% last year.

Off-price retailer The TJX Companies reported May 2007 sales of $1.4bn, up 9% over the same monthly period last year. Same-store sales, meanwhile, increased 5% for the four-week period ended 2 June.

Department store chain retailer Saks saw sales total $248.9m for the four weeks ended 2 June, compared to the four weeks of May 2006, a 39.4% increase. Same-store sales increased 37.5% for the same four-week period.

Fashion apparel retailer Dillard's said that sales for the four weeks of May were $527.9m compared to sales of $533.5m for the four weeks of May 2006, decreasing 1%. Same-store sales decreased 2%, the company said.

Total department store sales at JCPenney increased 0.3% for May, compared to last year. Same-store sales decreased 2.0%, compared to initial guidance for sales to be flat, from an 11.1% increase in the same month last year.
