The following is a general roundup of apparel and shoe chains' September 2006 sales results. The list will be updated as new results become available.

Plus-size chain United Retail Group today (5 October) announced that net sales increased 11% to US$40.1m during the past month, from $36.9m during September 2005. The group announced a 9% same-store sales increase for the month.

Young women's retailer The Wet Seal posted a same-store sales increased of 5.8% for September, compared with an increase of 44.9% in the same period a year ago. Net sales for the five-week period ended were $52.3m, compared with net sales of $47.9m in the same period last year, an increase of 9.0%.

Men's wear chain JoS. A. Bank Clothiers announces that its total sales for the month increased 14.4% to $46.1m, compared with $40.3m in September 2005. Same-store sales increased 2.7% in fiscal the month, compared with an increase of 12.9% in the 2005 period.

Jewellery and accessories retailer Claire's Stores said that its same-store sales rose 1% compared to last September, while total sales during the five-week period increased 8% to $125.5m compared with $116.4m in the same month last year.

Maternity apparel retailer Mothers Work announced preliminary net sales for the month of September showing same-store sales increases of 10.6% based on 1,460 locations, compared to an increase of 1.9% for September 2005, based on 1,015 locations. Preliminary net sales for the month increased approximately 8.3% to $49.5m, from $45.7m reported for the month of September 2005.

Ladies' wear retailer bebe stores said net sales increased 27.2% to $61.8m from $48.6m last year. Same-store sales increased 15.3% compared to a 12.3% increase a year ago.

Lifestyle retailer Guess said net sales increased 16.3% to $67.0m from $57.6m while same-store sales increased 11.3% compared to a 14.2% in 2005.

Children's store Gymboree said net sales were $84.1m, a 25% increase from $67.3m a year ago. Same-store sales increased 20% compared to an increase of 10% last year.

Hot Topic, a teens' and young adults' retailer, said net sales increased 2% to $63.7m as same-store sales decreased 7.3% compared to a 5.6% decrease a year ago.

Clothing and homewares chain Ross Stores said net sales increased 12% to $499m from $446m. Same-store sales increased 6% compared to last year's 9% increase.

Apparel giant Gap said net sales increased 4% to $1.46bn compared to sales of $1.41bn a year ago. Same-store sales decreased 3%, comparing to a 6% decrease in 2005.

Specialty women's apparel chain Cache said net sales increased 1.3% to $25.1m with same-store sales increasing 4%.

Diversified goods retailer Limited Brands said net sales increased 14% to $781.3m from $687.3m last year as same-store sales increased 12%.

Career and casual apparel retailer Dress Barn said net sales increased 18% to $142.1m from $120.3m as same-store sales increased 13%.

Specialty apparel company New York & Company said net sales increased 9.2% to $114.6m from $104.9m while same-store sales increased 2.3% compared to a 0.4% decrease the year before.

Kids' retailer Children's Place Retail Stores said net sales increased 31% to $210.3m from $160.7m in 2005. Same-store sales, meanwhile, increased 20%.

Leather goods firm Wilsons The Leather Experts said net sales were $23.6m compared to $27.3m previously. Same-store sales decreased 15.5% compared to a 6.6% decrease the year before.

Young men's and women's chain The Buckle said net sales increased 12% to $50m from $44.7m before. Same-store sales increased 8.7%.
 
At clothing, accessories and gift company Chico's, net sales were $164.5m compared to $143.1m the year before, while same-store sales increased 2.1%.

Off-price department store chain Stein Mart's net sales increased 4.6% to $131.4m from $125.6m in 2005. Same-store sales increased 4.6% compared to a 4.8% increase the year before.
Brand name apparel firm Stage Stores said that total sales for the five-week increased 22.8% to $121.0m from $98.5m in the prior year period. Same-store sales increased 11.0% versus a decrease of 2.6% in September last year. The Company noted that last year's results were negatively impacted by hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Consumer goods group Limited Brands posted a same-store sales increase of 12% for the September period. Net sales increased 14% to $781.3m compared to net sales of $687.3m during the same month last year.

Wilsons The Leather Experts reported sales of $23.6m for September, as compared to $27.3m during the same period of 2005. Same-store sales at the leather company decreased 15.5% during September, compared to the same period last year.

Retailer Nordstrom has reported preliminary sales of $732.4m for September, an increase of 15.0% compared to sales of $636.7m for the same period in 2005. Same-store sales jumped 13.4%.

Teen apparel retailer Deb Shops said that same-store sales increased 6.8% for the month, while total sales increased 10.4% to $28.3m, compared with $25.6m for September 2005.

Women's fashion chain The Cato Corporation posted sales of $67.7m for September this year, an increase of 8% over sales of $62.5m for the same five week period in 2005. Same-store sales increased 3% for the month.

Women's speciality retailer AnnTaylor Stores Corporation has announced that total net sales for the month of September increased 13.9% to $232.3m over total net sales of $204.0m for the same period in 2005. Same-store sales at the company increased 5.8% compared to a decrease of 2.7% last year.

Lifestyle retailer Abercrombie & Fitch posted net sales of $295.3m for the period, a 29% increase over last year's September net sales of $228.3m. September same-store sales increased 10% compared to the 2005 period.

Federated Department Stores reported total sales of $2.303bn for the month of September, which was a decrease of 6.5% compared to total sales of $2.464bn in the prior year period, impacted by the divestiture or clearance of 78 duplicative store locations over the past year. On a same-store basis, Federated's sales for September were up 6.2%.
