Off-price retailer Ross Stores Inc, which sells overstocks of branded apparel and housewares at discounted prices, yesterday said earnings for the second quarter ended on 3 August rose to $49.7 million from $35.4 million a year earlier.

Sales increased 21 per cent to $877 million, with the strongest performance in junior apparel, followed by young men's and shoes.

Ross expects to open 22 new stores in the third quarter and end the year with 507 stores. It is targeting same-store sales growth of 5 per cent in the third quarter.
