The following is a general round-up of US apparel and footwear retailers' October sales results released in the past couple of days:

Department store operator Nordstrom Inc reported a 9.6 per cent rise in same-store sales and said total sales for the four weeks to November 2 climbed 12.8 per cent year-on-year to $425.8m.

Specialty retailer Men's Wearhouse said its US same-store sales rose 3.7 per cent last month but its Canadian same-store sales slipped 2.5 per cent. Total sales rose to $98.5m from $91.5m last year.

Charming Shoppes Inc said same-store sales slipped three per cent last month with total sales down seven per cent to $159.3m from $170.4m in the year-ago month.

Clothing chain J Crew Group Inc said October same-store sales for its retail division rose 0.8 per cent and total sales for the four weeks ended November 2 rose 11 per cent to $71.1m from $65.9m in the year-ago period.

Maternity wear retailer Mothers Work Inc said its net sales climbed 15.6 per cent last month to $38.4m from $33.2m in the year-ago period, with same-store sales up 7.4 per cent.

Brown Shoe Co said same-store sales at its Famous Footwear chain climbed 0.5 per cent last month with Naturalizer domestic same-store sales up 17.5 per cent. Total sales at Famous Footwear rose 4.6 per cent to $72m with total Naturalizer sales up 0.8 per cent at $11.7m.

Women's clothing chain Chico's FAS Inc said its October same-store sales rose a better-than-expected 18.1 per cent and added total sales soared 46.5 per cent to a record $43.3m from $29.5m in 2001.

Ohio-based youth clothing chain Abercrombie & Fitch Co reported a three per cent slip in October same-store sales and said total sales for the four weeks to November 2 increased 21 per cent to $104.8m from $86.4m last year.

Catalogue retailer The Spiegel Group announced a 21 per cent slump in October sales to $171.9m from $217.9m last year and added same-store sales for its Eddie Bauer division slipped seven per cent for the month.

Retail giant Saks Inc said same-store sales fell 0.7 per cent on a total company basis with Saks Department Store Group same-store sales down two per cent and 1.4 per cent at Saks Fifth Avenue Enterprises.

Department store operator The Bon-Ton Stores Inc announced total and same-store sales for the four weeks to November 2 increased 4.6 per cent to $58.9m versus $56.3m in the same period last year.

Off-price apparel retailer The TJX Companies Inc said October same-store sales climbed seven per cent while total sales jumped 17 per cent to $1.03bn from $885m last year.

Women's fashion chain AnnTaylor Stores Corp posted a 0.2 per cent rise in same-store sales and said total sales for the month increased 11 per cent to $114.7m from $103.3m in the year-ago period.

Specialty clothing retailer The Wet Seal Inc reported a 9.1 per cent plunge in October same-store sales and said total sales were flat at $40.2m.

Wilsons The Leather Experts Inc suffered a 5.7 per cent slide in same-store sales for last month and a 3.3 per cent slip in total sales to $58.7m from $60.7m last year.

Federated Department Stores Inc posted a 0.3 per cent rise in same-store sales and said total sales edged up 2.4 per cent to $1.08bn from $1.05bn in 2001.

The Elder-Beerman Stores Corp said October same-store sales dipped 0.7 per cent and added total store sales slipped 0.6 per cent year-on-year to $46.7m.

Footwear retailer Shoe Carnival Inc posted a 13.7 per cent jump in same-store sales for last month and said total sales rose to $37.9m from $30.5m in 2001.

JC Penney Company Inc announced comparable department store sales increased 13.7 per cent for the four weeks ended October 26, significantly above plan.

Massachusetts-based men's and women's apparel retailer Talbots said same-store sales rose 1.7 per cent last month and added total sales climbed four per cent to $135.2m from $130.3m in 2001.

Victoria's Secret owner Limited Brands Inc said October same-store sales rose three per cent, with total sales up four per cent to $615.2m from $591.7m in the same period last year.

Women's clothing chain bebe stores inc reported a 4.7 per cent fall in same-store sales for the four weeks to October 31 but said total retail sales climbed 8.5 per cent to $25.6m from $23.6m in 2001.

Apparel and footwear retailer Stage Stores Inc reported a 6.9 per cent increase in same-store sales and said total sales increased 8.9 per cent to $61.1m from $56.1m in the prior year period.

The Children's Place Retail Stores Inc announced a 16 per cent plunge in October same-store sales and said total sale rose two per cent to $56.2m from $55.3m.
