Here is a general round-up of United States apparel and footwear retailers' April 2004 sales results released this week. Please note that this article will be updated as individual retailers' results are released.

Philadelphia-based maternity wear retailer Mothers Work Inc posted a net sales increase of 9.9 per cent to $48 million, up from $43.6m in the same month last year, despite a 0.4 per cent fall in comparable store sales.

Youth-oriented casual apparel retailer Aeropostale Inc reported 48.6 per cent growth in net sales to $57.2m, compared with $38.5m in April 2003, and a 19.3 per cent increase in comparable store sales.

Pennsylvania-based casual clothing retailer American Eagle Outfitters Inc announced sales of $115.1m, up 17.2 per cent from $98.2m in the same period last year, and 8.3 per cent growth in same-store sales.

Houston-based apparel retailer Men's Wearhouse stated total sales of $123.4m, a 13 per cent year-on-year increase, and a US comparable store sales increase of 10.4 per cent.

California-based apparel retailer Hot Topic Inc enjoyed a 22 per cent increase in sales to $39.4m, up from $32.4m in the comparable year-on-year period, and a 0.7 per cent incline in comparable store sales.

Plus-size women's fashion retailer United Retail Group suffered a slight drop in total sales to $33.4m, down from $35m in the same month last year, and a three per cent decline in same-store sales.

Tennessee-based apparel retailer Goody's Family Clothing saw sales rise to $100.1m from $95.1m a year earlier, along with a 1.8 per cent rise in comparable store sales.

Nebraska-based men's apparel and footwear retailer The Buckle Inc posted a 13.7 per cent increase in sales to $27.3m, up from $24m in the same period 12 months ago, and an 8.6 per cent rise in same-store sales.

Florida-based women's fashion retailer Chico's FAS Inc reported a 46.4 per cent leap in sales to $87.2m, up from $59.6m in April last year, and a 16 per cent rise in comparable company-owned store sales.

Retail group Limited Brands, which operates the Victoria's Secret lingerie chain, had net sales of $586.6m, up from $580.6m in the same period a year earlier, and a comparable store sales rise of two per cent.

Maryland-based men's apparel retailer JoS A Bank Clothiers Inc experienced comparable store sales growth of 2.7 per cent and total sales growth of 13.5 per cent year-on-year to $26m.

California-based women's apparel retailer Bebe Stores Inc enjoyed sales of $30.4m, a year-on-year increase of 20.2 per cent, and a same-store sales increase of 10 per cent.

New Jersey-based kids' clothing retailer The Children's Place Retail Stores Inc announced sales of $68.7m, a 15 per cent increase compared to sales of $59.5m in April 2003, and comparable store sales growth of seven per cent.

Indiana-headquartered footwear retailer Shoe Carnival Inc stated a 3.8 per cent increase in sales to $48.6m, up from $46.8m in the same period of 2003, and a 4.6 per cent fall in comparable store sales.

Leather apparel retailer Wilsons The Leather Experts Inc suffered a fall in sales to $17.9m, down from $21.5m in the comparable year-on-year period, along with a drop in same-store sales of 3.5 per cent.

Branded apparel retailer Stage Stores Inc reported a 40 per cent increase in sales to $91.7m, compared with $65.5m in the same period a year prior, and a slight same-store sales rise of 0.3 per cent.

Online fashion retailer Blufly Inc registered a 27 per cent increase in sales to $3.4m, up from $2.6m in the same period last year.

Infants' apparel retailer The Gymboree Corporation saw net sales rise eight per cent to $45.3m, up from $41.8m in the corresponding month last year, and a small comparable store sales increase of one per cent.

Women's apparel retailer Christopher & Banks posted an 11 per cent rise in total sales to $41m, compared with $36.8m for April 2003, despite a same-store sales decline of three per cent.

Discount fashion retailer Stein Mart Inc produced sales of $112.5m, up from $107.7m in April last year, and a comparable store sales rise of 6.7 per cent.

California-based contemporary apparel retailer The Wet Seal Inc endured a fall in net sales to $31.9m, down from $38.9m in the same period a year earlier, and a same-store sales decrease of 16.8 per cent.

Casual apparel retailer Pacific Sunwear of California Inc saw a 21.8 per cent increase in total sales to $73.7m, up from $60.5m in the same period 12 months ago, and an 11.4 per cent jump in comparable store sales.

Massachusetts-based apparel and footwear retailer The Talbots Inc posted a minimal comparable store sales increase of 0.3 per cent alongside a total sales increase of six per cent year-on-year to $139.2m.

Retail group Charming Shoppes Inc, which operates the Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug and Catherines chains, reported a five per cent year-on-year increase in sales to $197.6m and a four per cent rise in comparable store sales.

Juniors' apparel retailer Deb Shops Inc announced a 2.7 per cent total sales rise to $73m, up from $70m in the comparable year-on-year period, and a 2.4 per cent same-store sales increase.

Fashion specialty retailer Nordstrom Inc revealed preliminary sales of $491.7m, up 12.4 per cent year-on-year, and a 10 per cent jump in same-store sales.

Fashion retailer Guess? Inc enjoyed a 22.2 per cent boost in sales to $44.8m, up from $36.6m in April 2003, and a 17.5 per cent leap in same-store sales.

North Carolina-based women's apparel retailer The Cato Corporation had sales of $71.2m, a three per cent year-on-year increase, and comparable store sales growth of two per cent.

Massachusetts-based off-price apparel retailer The TJX Companies Inc reported total sales growth of 14 per cent to $1.09 billion, up from $956m in the same month last year, and a consolidated same-store sales increase of five per cent.

Youth-oriented apparel retailer Abercrombie & Fitch posted net sales of $121.7m, a 19 per cent year-on-year increase, and flat same-store sales.

Footwear retailer Brown Shoe Company Inc posted flat sales of $91.9m and a same-store sales slip of 1.2 per cent at its Famous Footwear chain, along with slightly improved sales of $11m and 2.3 per cent comparable store sales growth at its Naturalizer chain.

Women's apparel retailer AnnTaylor Stores Corporation enjoyed a 20.3 per cent jump in total net sales to $159.41m, up from $132.49m in the same month a year ago, and comparable store sales growth of 9.6 per cent.

California-based off-price apparel retailer Ross Stores Inc saw total sales go up 11 per cent year-on-year to $289m alongside a same-store sales increase of two per cent.

Apparel retailer Gap Inc enjoyed net sales of $1.25bn, an increase of seven per cent year-on-year, and a three per cent rise in comparable store sales.

Virginia-based menswear retailer S&K Famous Brands Inc saw same-store sales inch up 1.7 per cent and total sales climb to $16.1m from $15.4m in the comparable year-on-year period.

Apparel and furnishings retailer Bon-Ton Stores Inc witnessed a 76 per cent year-on-year increase in total sales to $83.5m, despite a 4.2 per cent decline in comparable store sales.

Texas-based retail group JC Penney Co Inc reported a 5.3 per cent same-store sales rise and a five per cent year-on-year total sales rise to $1.1bn at its department stores.
