Retailer Saks Incorporated today announced that comparable store sales for the four weeks ended 3 August 2002 decreased 3.6 per cent on a total company basis compared with the same period last year.

By segment, the company said comparable store sales for Saks Department Store Group decreased 3.1 per cent to $217.9m from $224.5m and 4.3 per cent to $145.7m from $134.7m for Saks Fifth Avenue Enterprises for the period.

Merchandise categories with the best sales performances for SDSG in July were accessories, home, women's better and large size apparel, private brands, and cosmetics. Categories with softer sales performances for SDSG in July were women's moderate and petite apparel, juniors, dresses, and men's sportswear.

Categories with the best sales performances for SFAE in July were jewellery, American designer collections, cosmetics, bridal, handbags, and contemporary sportswear. Categories with the softest sales performances for SFAE in July were men's clothing, designer casual women's sportswear, and women's large size apparel.
