Department store group Saks Inc has reported an $8.2 million second-quarter profit compared to a loss of $25.3m a year ago, boosted by the sale of some of its stores.

Saks, which has sold of its Proffitt's and McRae's businesses and is considering selling some of its other units, said sales fell 3 per cent to $1.32 billion from $1.35bn last year. Same-store sales for the period increased 2.1 per cent.

The results included a $57m after-tax gain from Sak's sale of Proffitt's and McRae's.

Saks is continuing to look at options for its Northern Department Store Group as well as the Club Libby Lu specialty store chain.
