The Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC) has developed a new standard that specifies the procedures to be used when preparing textile materials for visual colour assessment - and could help reduce delays and confusion in the supply chain.

It also details viewing conditions and the terminology for reporting surface colour under specific lighting and viewing conditions so that consistent comparisons are maintained.

Sue Bolton, SDC technical coordinator says: "This new standard meets the needs of the industry and if companies adhere to the procedures outlined - with consistent assessment and uniform communication terminology - enormous savings can be made from a retail and manufacturing perspective."

As well as the standard, 'SDC 1/01:2008 Visual colour assessment of textiles - Method', the SDC has produced a best practice guide which explains the practicalities of applying the standard.
