The president of the American Textile Manufacturers Institute is to resign his post less than a year after taking up the position.

Parks Shackelford has been appointed head of the Washington office of sugar producer Florida Crystals Corp, but will remain with ATMI throughout July while the trade group searches for his replacement.

Potential candidates from both inside and outside ATMI are being considered for the role.

Shackelford has denied suggestions that the problems facing the US textile industry and speculation that ATMI will merge with another textile trade association are behind his decision to leave the organisation which, he says, "has grown stronger" in his time there.
