Footwear designer Steven Madden was on Monday behind bars having started his 41-month prison sentence for conspiracy to commit money laundering and securities fraud.

Madden, founder of the self-titled shoe chain, began his jail term at the federal prison camp at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida last Wednesday after pleading guilty to the two charges in May last year.

His attorney Joel Winograd said he expects Madden to serve around 18 months after time off for good behaviour and participation in an alcohol rehabilitation program.
