Animal rights protestors have launched a campaign against some of the world's top soccer stars playing in the World Cup for wearing boots made out of Australian kangaroo leather.

Members of English animal rights group Vegetarians International Voice for Animals (Viva!) have written to players including David Beckham and Fabien Barthez saying that kangaroos are killed inhumanely after being captured alive.

Many soccer players wear boots made from Kangaroo leather as they say it gives them a better "feel" for the ball. Leading sportswear manufacturers including Adidas, Nike and Reebok have also come under fire from the group for using the leather in their products.

However, Australian officials have accused Viva! of misinformation, saying they are putting jobs at risk by harming the industry's image.
