BTTG Shirley Technologies in Manchester has become the first laboratory to gain UKAS Accreditation for the new European Standard for testing apparel fabrics for their solar UV protective properties.

The new standard, EN 13758-1, replaces the former British Standard BS 7914, which has now been officially withdrawn by BSI.

BTTG says that a new software package has been specially developed in compliance with EN 13758-1 for its Camspec M350 spectrophotometer.

At present the British Standard BS 7949 that specifies solar UV protection requirements for children's clothing remains in place. However, in due course this will also be replaced by another European Standard, EN 13758-2.
