Sports footwear retailer the Sports Shoe has announced that it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and will be forced to close two of its stores.

The retailer has seen a drop in demand for sports shoes and has been forced to close its underperforming stores as well as cut prices to enable it to record a profit.

Other sports shoe retailers have also been forced to close out some of their underperforming stores. Just For Feet and Foot Locker both cited poor sales in some stores as reasons for closures.

The drop in sales has been blamed on the fashion shift from sports trainers such as Nike, Reebok and Adidas to more outdoor suitable footwear such as that worn by climbers and hikers.
