Spanish retail firm Grupo Cortefiel has launched an online store for its Springfield brand.

The store will initially operate only in Spain, with a view to extend its coverage to the UK, France and Portugal in the coming months, the company said.

Grupo Cortefiel has created a “virtual” store room in its new Aranjuez distribution centre to support the launch. It has more than 100,000 square metres of floor space with a dedicated picking and packing section.

“We are expecting the online channel to represent between 3% and 6% of the group’s total sales, depending on the development of electronic trading in the markets in which we are present”, said Patricia Benito de Mateo, director of Ecommerce at Grupo Cortefiel.

According to a recent study on the online consumer carried out by ISEM Fashion Business School in collaboration with Grupo Cortefiel, 48% of Spaniards shop on the internet, 70% of whom do so in online stores which also have physical establishments.
