Collapsing clothing manufacturer SR Gent has shut its Barnsley production plant with the loss of around 100 jobs.

The company, once a large-scale employer in South Yorkshire and a key supplier for clothing stores including Marks & Spencer, has been struggling to cope with competition from low-cost overseas production in recent years.

The latest closure, which follows the end of production in Rotherham, South Kirkby and Sheffield, signals the death of the company's UK manufacturing operations.

Its warehouse, and distribution and processing sites will be Gent's only remaining assets within the UK.

SR Gent was bought out by Singapore entrepreneur Ponnuswamy in 2003 after it announced intentions to begin cutting down its UK factory base.
