Sportswear firm Adidas-Salomon AG has named Erich Stamminger as president and CEO of Adidas America Inc.

The appointment of Stamminger, an Adidas executive board member and global marketer, comes amid an announcement by the German company that it is moving several key global marketing functions and personnel to its American headquarters in Portland, Oregon.

According to Herzogenaurach-based CEO Herbert Hainer, North America is "key" to the company's success and Stamminger's appointment reflected this.

"Erich's presence and experience are ideally suited to focus our brand activities even more intensely and speed our return to growth," Hainer said.

"Erich combines an outstanding record of improving operations with a strong marketing background, having helped Adidas grow to record revenues and earnings while retaining its leading global brand image.

"He will now bring the same brand passion, focus and leadership to North America.
"At the same time, we will tie our global marketing organisation and Adidas America closer together."

Stamminger, a 20-year Adidas veteran, replaces Ross McMullin, on leave of absence due to health reasons and since resigned, in the CEO role.

McMullin's interim replacement Jim Stutts will continue to serve as chairman of TaylorMade-Adidas Golf.
