Summer sale and brand sale figures for department stores show the South Korean economy is on the road to recovery.

Department stores' sales during this period went up by 20-30 per cent compared with the same period last year.

For example, the 12 nationwide branches of Lotte Department Store recorded sales of 112.9bn won from July 1 - 7, an increase of 25.9 per cent on last year.

Sales at Hyundai Department Store's four branches in Seoul increased 31.2 per cent during the first seven days of July.

The five nationwide branches of Shinsegae also increased sales by 21.5 per cent and Galleria Department Store and Midopa saw increases of more than 20 per cent.

Industry sources say the increases are due to young people buying more clothes and more high-quality brands being bought for the holiday period.
