Bangladesh's largest industrial sector, the ready-made garment industry, has asked President Shahabudin Ahmed to try to resolve the current political stale mate which it says is taking a heavy toll on businesses.

Industry leaders made the appeal at a meeting with the president as the opposition alliance called for yet another round of general strikes next week to force the government out of office.

The ready-made garment industry accounts for more than 75 per cent of Bangladesh's export income.

Industry leaders say many overseas buyers have now begun avoiding Bangladesh and are placing orders elsewhere.
