Global technology and innovation executive Mike McNamara has left Tesco to join retail giant Target Corp as chief information officer.

McNamara joins Target from UK-based Tesco, where he spent 15 years, most recently as the global supermarket chain’s chief information officer. He takes over from Bob DeRodes, who is retiring.

McNamara will report to Target CEO Brian Cornell and will be tasked with further advancing Target’s digital transformation and helping Target become “a leading omni-channel retailer”.

He said of the appointment: “Tesco is a world class brand and I’m grateful for the time I spent there. Looking ahead, I’m thrilled to join Target at a time when Brian and the leadership team are intensifying their investment in technology and prioritizing its role in Target’s future success.”

Target yesterday announced plans to open 15 new stores in the US during 2015, including eight new-style TargetExpress outlets. The company will also open one new CityTarget store and six general merchandise stores.
