Japanese textile producer Teijin Ltd is partnering with US outdoor clothing retailer Patagonia Inc to recycle polyester garments in the US and Japan.

The recycling scheme, which will be kick-started next month, will involve Patagonia placing collection boxes in direct sales outlets to enable shoppers to leave used, unwanted clothing.

Teijin's subsidiary Teijin Fibers Ltd will turn the garments into polyester fibres, which Patagonia will then use to make new clothing items.

Teijin already operates recycling programmes with approximately 70 Japanese clothing producers and trading companies, but the scheme with Patagonia is the first with a US manufacturer.
