Leading British supermarket group Tesco is extending its Finest brand into clothing for the first time, with a trial range of more up-market polo shirts, trousers, shirts and leather jackets going on sale in 18 of its 1,982 stores.

Tim Mason, marketing director, told The Sunday Times he was confident the Finest brand would successfully stretch to clothing. "It's going into some very big and successful stores where a lot of customers will get to see it. I think it will do well," he said.

Until now, Tesco has been best-known for its more value-conscious Cherokee and Florence & Fred labels.
