Materials specialist Texon has been recognised with a gold-level Material Health Certificate from the Cradle to Cradle (C2C) Products Innovation Institute for its Texon Vogue Sahara material.

The Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute is a global, not-for-profit organisation, dedicated to transforming the safety, health and sustainability of products through its Certified Product Standard. Cradle to Cradle Certified is a globally recognised measure of safer, more sustainable products, made for the circular economy.

A Material Health Certificate is awarded to products that meet the material health requirements of the multi-attribute Cradle to Cradle Certified Product Standard. The certificate is valid for two years.

Texon became involved in the Cradle to Cradle community in 2019 at the invitation of denim fashion brand G-Star Raw, which wanted to source an environmentally friendly jacron label material, aligned with the high standards it sets for its denim range.

Based on Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper, Texon Vogue is already a highly sustainable product, Texon says. Widely recognised as a vegan-friendly alternative to leather-based products, the durable, washable, paper-based material has a range of uses and is certified for jacron applications, including the production of jean labels.

At the request of G-Star Raw, Texon worked with the denim manufacturer's supplier and Eco Intelligent Growth (EIG), a Barcelona-based circular economy consultancy and independent third party C2C assessment body, to ensure that its Texon Vogue Sahara production processes conformed to Cradle to Cradle's Gold Material Health standards. Following an in-depth assessment, Texon made one change to its manufacturing process – switching to a chlorine-free bleaching solution that satisfied Cradle to Cradle's Material Health criteria at Gold level.

"At Texon we have a long-standing commitment to sustainability, which dates back years. At the start of 2020, we set out our mission to become a zero waste organisation by 2025. As part of this work we've set ourselves some firm goals relating to our carbon footprint, our use of virgin materials, our waste streams and our water consumption," says Boyd Mulder, director for marketing, NPDI and sustainability at Texon. "Ensuring our products conform to the standards set by the world's leading advisory bodies, such as Cradle to Cradle, is also a vital part of our sustainability story."

Texon Vogue is available in a range of colours and finishes, while Texon Vogue Sahara is a beige material, certified for jacron applications including jeans labels.

Easy to stitch onto denim garments, Texon Vogue can withstand stone washing, enzyme washing and dry-cleaning. Dimensionally stable, the material does not shrink or stretch, but does wrinkle slightly after washing, delivering what the firm calls a "natural vintage look".
