The textile industry in Pakistan is upgrading its machinery and ploughing some of the profits from two good cotton harvests back into the industry.

The country imported $339.11m worth of textile machinery between July last year and May this year, compared with $177.65 for the same period last year.

Industry sources say the industry needs around $1.5bn annual investment and expansion over the next three years to compete in the global market.

During the last two years, around $600m had been invested into the textile industry.

The only concern is that most of the investment is being made by big industrial groups who only make up 20 per cent of the entire textile industry.
