Pakistan's Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Ltd (SNGPL), a company that supplies gas to the northern part of the country, is to end its weekly one-day gas cuts for the textile industry after completing annual maintenance work this week.

In a letter sent to the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) the company said the gas supply to the textile industry would initially be disconnected during the period from 8-17 June.

The disruption will be managed by dividing the industry into four regions, with no region facing disconnection for more than three days during the interim period.

Around 75% of the textile industry in the northern part of Pakistan operates on gas fired electricity generation systems, and has already faced more energy problems than the south of the country.

The weekly one-day gas 'holiday' was introduced to handle an ongoing energy shortage in the country.
