Problems in the textile sector continue with 33 mills closing during the 1998-2001 period, reported the Economic Times. Around 23,000 workers were affected by the closures.

The main reasons cited for the mills' failure were technological obsolescence, lack of modernisation, financial crisis and labour problems.

The Tamil Nadu region was the worst hit, with nine mills going out of business and more than 4000 workers losing their jobs.

Andhra Pradesh ranked second with five closures followed by Maharashtra with four.
