Industrial thread maker Coats is among a group of material manufacturers that have partnered with HeiQ to develop a multi-functional 'viroblocked' jacket which features the Swiss speciality textile chemistry company's Viroblock technology in all of its components.

The Just5 jacket has been developed in collaboration with 2A-Nyguard, Vagotex and Sitip and is the first garment fully powered by HeiQ Viroblock, which is among the first textile technologies in the world to be proven effective in laboratory testing against SARS-CoV-2, the virus from the coronavirus family that causes Covid-19.

While the treatment does not protect the wearer or others against food-borne (or disease-causing) bacteria, the firms say the jacket establishes a "highly effective barrier" to shield the wearer from spoiling contaminants with HeiQ Viroblock preserving the hygiene of the materials.

What's more, all the components of Just5 are individually available for any apparel or home textile brands to create their own innovations.

The five components consist of:

  • 2A-Nyguard Nyshield zippers – Zippers are touched often throughout the day. Self-sanitising zippers from specialist 2A will restore usability in just five minutes after every touch.
  • Coats ProtectV – Sewing thread from Coats adds anti-microbial and anti-viral properties to every stitch.
  • HeiQ Viroblock Swiss antimicrobial fabric technology  HeiQ Viroblock was originally developed to treat face masks registered by Swiss Medic as a medical device. Respirator masks treated with the same technology are authorised by US FDA under EUA.
  • Sitip warp-knitted fabric  Elastic fabric for the extendable cuffs of Just5 to shield the hands when touching potentially contaminated surfaces. Warp-knitting is fabric technology that prevents a yarn from laddering after a tear, of which Sitip specialises.
  • Windtex Vagotex fabric  breathable, water-repellent and wind-resistant fabric. Windtex Vagotex SpA is a leader in lamination and processing of technical fabrics for sports and footwear.

Just5 comes just two weeks after Coats said it was partnering with HeiQ to incorporate Viroblock technology into a new range of threads and engineered yarns.

Non-toxic and hypoallergenic, HeiQ Viroblock merges microsilver technology to attract virus particles which then combine with vesicle technology to break down the viral membrane within seconds. The microsilver technology uses recycled silver to enhance its sustainable offering, while the vesicle technology is bio-based.

Research is ramping up around the world to develop new technologies that tap into growing demand for antimicrobial, virus and bacteria killing fibres and fabrics generated by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Carlo Centonze, co-founder and CEO of HeiQ Group, told just-style last month the crisis has "opened a whole new chapter for the development of antimicrobial surfaces and textiles."

A crowdfunding campaign starts today (26 August) on Kickstarter for those interested in supporting Just5 and placing pre-orders. Finished jackets are expected to be available end of autumn.
