A Union leader has called on the Federal Government to review the country's membership of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). Far from taking advantage of the promised benefits he says, the country's industry is on the verge of collapse.

Issa Aremu, the Acting Secretary General of the National Union of Textile Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN), told ThisDay that the promised WTO advantages of export and market access to developed economies of Europe and America were yet to materialise.

He added that instead, factory closures and massive imports of cheap and poor quality goods into the country were commonplace.

He called on government to protect the textile industry, stem the flood of second hand textile goods, and do more to improve the infrastructure needed for industrial development.
