Leading off-price clothing chain The TJX Companies Inc on Thursday announced a two per cent climb in consolidated same-store sales got August and said total sales climbed 11 per cent to $920 million from $826m in 2001.

The operator of 704 stores under banners including TJ Maxx and Marshalls, said for the fiscal year-to-date, consolidated same-store sales were up four per cent and total sales up 13 per cent at $5.6 billion.

President and CEO, Edmond English, commented: "August sales met our expectations despite the unseasonably hot weather in many parts of the country that affected demand for fall apparel during most of the month.

"Inventories remain in excellent shape across all divisions as we enter September and we continue to take full advantage of the many off-price buying opportunities available to us."
