Apparel and accessories maker Jaclyn Inc reported higher first-quarter sales and earnings amid additional sales and profitability from its Topsville business.

For the first quarter of fiscal 2003, ended 30 September 2002, net sales were $29.94 million compared to $18.22 million for the same quarter last year. Net earnings were $356,000, or $.14 per share, excluding the remaining charges for the acquisition of Topsville Inc, a manufacturer and distributor of private label infants' and children's clothing. This compared to net earnings for the same period in 2001 of $53,000, or $.02 per share.

Allan Ginsburg, chairman of the board, said: "As we enter the second quarter of fiscal 2003, we also expect significantly better sales and earnings compared to the same period in fiscal 2002. "For the full fiscal year, operating results are expected to improve substantially compared to fiscal 2002."
