Japanese apparel maker Toray Industries has revealed ambitious plans to strengthen its research and development team in China over the next four years.

It will invest 2.0 billion Japanese yen in its subsidiary Toray Fibers & Textiles Research Laboratories (China) Co in Nantong, Jiangsu Province, eastern China and will increase the number of Chinese researchers from 50 to 500 by 2008.

The company says it aims to save labour costs and to improve operating efficiency by hiring local people.
