Industry trouble-shooter Sir John Harvey-Jones was among the guest speakers at a conference in Northern Ireland on Tuesday aimed at addressing key issues facing the province's textiles and clothing sector.

Organised by the Northern Ireland Textiles and Clothing Training Council (NITC), the event aimed to improve efficiency, professionalism and competitiveness within the clothing and textiles sector and address the changes taking place within it.

NITC chairman, Gordon Parkes said: "Northern Ireland's businesses must keep up to speed with change while maintaining productivity and progress, yet embrace leading-edge thinking and continuous innovation.

"Therefore, the need for strategic management at this time is paramount, as is the observation and understanding of global markets and their threat to local business."

He added that the conference would address those issues and emphasise the need to train, inspire and motivate staff in the ever-changing nature of the clothing and textiles sector.
