Sportswear company Under Armour is launching its first ever performance training footwear line in the US this weekend (3 May), in a bid to take on Nike and Adidas who currently dominate the sector.

Under Armour's Performance Trainers - the company's first non-cleated footwear offering - add to its performance apparel and football cleats ranges.

The line-up includes the UA Proto Power Trainer, UA Proto Speed Trainer and UA Proto Evade Trainer.

The Proto Speed Trainer and Proto Evade Trainer are available for men, women and youth. The Proto Power Trainer is available in men's and boys'.

Each trainer features "Directional Cushioning Engineering (DCE)" to strengthen directional movements and physical skills, the company said.

Under Armour worked with Vernon Davis of the San Francisco 49ers and Alfonso Soriano of the Chicago Cubs to field test the trainers.

"Today's athletes, who train 95% of the time to be at their best the 5% of the time they are competing on the field, court or ice, need better footwear," said Kevin Plank, chairman and CEO.

"Too many young athletes are training in the wrong footwear, and we're offering the equipment that's going to maximise their focused regimen and help make them better."
