A senior union leader has called on the Government to provide more help for the UK's ailing textile industry.

The plea from Peter Booth, national organiser of the manufacturing sector of the Transport & General Workers Union, was prompted by recent factory closures and hundreds of job losses in the Yorkshire region.

Speaking at the Bradford headquarters of the Textile Trade Group of the T&G, Mr Booth told the Yorkshire Post: "During these last two months we've seen an increase in the level of bad news across the country's textile industry.

"During the last week alone we have learned of the proposed closures of Benson Turner and Blackburn & Sutcliffe, with total job losses of 186.

"The backing already provided by Government for the industry needs to be stepped up."
