Reports in the French media claim leading department store chain Galeries Lafayette's bid to take over Marks & Spencer's stores has met with resistance from union chiefs.

According to Le Figaro, the M&S works council is refusing to nominate an independent expert to review the plan as required under French law.

Galeries Lafayette said the offer, under which it will retain only 10 of the 19 outlets while bringing in partners to operate the remainder, must be cleared before the end of the month.
