Global retailer Uniqlo has promoted Lawrence Meyer to the newly-created role of chief executive officer for the US.

Meyer joined the company in January to take up the role of chief operating officer. In his new position he will oversee the day-to-day operations of the brand and will have responsibility for Uniqlo's retail footprint in the US.

"Larry's steadfast leadership has been a tremendous asset to the company and a key component to our successful growth this year," said CEO of Fast Retailing, Tadashi Yanai. "Building a US-based executive team is a very important step in the next phase of our expansion in the US and this promotion is a logical step."

Uniqlo recently opened ten stores in the US in regions including New York, New Jersey and San Francisco. It currently operates 17 stores in the country and an e-commerce site.
