Clothing retailer Uniqlo has joined forces with fibre specialist Toray to develop a new range of ultra-lightweight down jackets.

The New Ultra Light Down outerwear jackets – three for men and three for women – use new technology to reduce their weight to 206g, enabling them to be folded or put into a pocket.

The light weight is achieved by a special heat and pressure process which avoids the need to include a “down pack” in the jacket construction.

It also incorporates ultra-thin thread as thick as one and a half human hairs, making the fabric slimmer but, Uniqlo claims, preserving softness and strength.

The company’s previous Ultra Light Down jackets included only one model each for men and women, rather than the three each for the new model.
