Youth-oriented apparel retailer Urban Outfitters Inc has posted a 21 per cent increase in same-store sales for the fourth quarter.

The Philadelphia-based company, which operates stores throughout the United States, Canada and Europe, said its individual retail chains Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie recorded comparable sales of 21 per cent and 22 per cent respectively for the quarter.

Direct-to-consumer sales, meanwhile, soared 110 per cent for the three-month period.

"We are very gratified by the extraordinary results posted by all three brands this quarter," chairman Richard Hayne said on behalf of the company, which also controls the Free People retail chain.

"The pace of 'comp' store sales in January increased over the robust levels set during the first two months of the quarter.

"January's exceptionally strong performance bodes well for first quarter results."
