Pan Asia Footwear Plc, Thailand's biggest shoe maker, is adamant that its performance this year will not be affected by the US terrorist attacks. The company, which produces shoes for Nike, says it has long-term orders that will see it through until the end of the period.

Pan Asia is in the process of turning round its business, and a rise in exports helped it record net profits of 195m bahts ($4.3m) in its last financial year, compared to the net loss of 249m bahts ($5.5m) posted at the end of 1999.

The company has also reduced costs through its extended purchases of local raw materials and the introduction of a more efficient system for waste reduction.
