A US coalition of 21 industry associations is calling on Congress and the Trump administration to ensure the creation and maintenance of domestic supply chains capable of producing personal protective equipment (PPE) in sufficient quantities through a number of means, including legislation.

In a joint statement, associations representing the full spectrum of domestic PPE production including SEAMS, the National Cotton Council of America, and the Alliance for American Manufacturing, say that creating sufficient quantities of medical supplies, as well as PPE, to meet a national health emergency is “of paramount concern for every citizen in this country”.

“The Covid-19 pandemic, which exposed severe shortages in our nation’s PPE supply and an over-reliance on foreign sourced products, underscores how important it is for the US government to incentivise, support and maintain domestic manufacturing capacity for PPE,” the letter reads.

“Our association members, encompassing every segment of the US textile, apparel and PPE supply chain, as well as unions representing workers, acted swiftly to convert manufacturing facilities and build supply chains virtually overnight to produce desperately needed PPE.

“We are united in our support of important principles that must be adopted in order to address our current public health needs and guarantee our nation is better prepared to respond to future emergencies,” the associations said.
