The US Department of Commerce has set a new limit on duty-free knit apparel imports from Haiti under the HOPE Act.

Under the terms of the Haitian Hemispheric Opportunity Through Partnership for Encouragement Act (HOPE), a limit is set on the amount of duty-free apparel that can be exported to the US from Haiti every year.

Because imports under the knit apparel TPL (Total Preference Level) exceeded the 52m SMEs (square metre equivalents) threshold during the month of July 2015, the applicable quota level for the 2014/2015 annual period from 1 October to 30 September is automatically increased to 200m SMEs.

The quota level for the new annual period, from 1 October 2015 to 30 September 2016, will be 70m SMEs until imports reach or exceed 52m SMEs.
