Footwear marketer Vans Inc has reported a second-quarter net loss of $3.7 million compared with a profit of $513,000 a year ago. Net sales were $60.6 million, versus $68.3 million in the same period last year.

The firm, whose footwear is geared towards surfers and skateboarders, added that same-store sales dropped 9.3 per cent. US wholesale sales were $19.2 million, versus $26.1 million; and total international sales were $18.4 million, down 3.8 per cent from $19.1 million a year ago.

Total US sales were $42.2 million, down from $49.2 million in last year's quarter. Sales through the company's US retail stores dropped 0.7 per cent to $23 million.

The company said it expected third-quarter sales to be in the region of $82 million to $85 million.
