The head of the world's largest retailer, Wal-Mart Stores Inc, saw his pay more than double last year to nearly $18.3 million, according to a report filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission on Tuesday.

Chief executive Lee Scott earned a bonus of $3.16m, up 77 per cent from 2001, along with a salary of $1.14m and $13.1m in restricted stock.

The Arkansas-based company earned $8 billion in the year to January, up 20 per cent from the year prior despite a weak domestic and global economy.

It added EVP Thomas Coughlin more than doubled his pay, earning a total of $7.87m in 2002 versus $3.11m in 2001.
