Trade and Industry secretary Manuel A. Roxas has confirmed that Wal-Mart will be setting up shop in the Philippines.

Roxas, who met with Wal-Mart Asia Pacific president Joe Halfeld last week, said the firm was expected to enter the market mid-year.

"Wal-Mart is continuing its entry strategy and is making the most of the opportunity presented by changes in political structure," Roxas said.

A cold chain and supply chain project is also pushed for a Wal-Mart investment. The establishment of an Internet service arm may also be pursued by the retail group.

"Wal-Mart is still negotiating with potential local partners, but it is prepared to come in alone," Roxas said.
