Leading Canadian action sports retailer, West 49 Inc, is expanding its retail network and online presence with the acquisitions of two strategic businesses.

West is buying a retail chain of 24 specialty stores operating under the banners Arsenic, Amnesia, and D-Tox from Modes Freedom Inc and is also purchasing Board Zone Inc, online action sports retailer operating under the domain name Boardzone.com.

The acquisitions are expected to add $20 million in annual revenue and $1.9m in operating income.

West 49 president and chief executive officer, Sam Baio, said: "These acquisitions further support our vision to build the dominant Canadian retailer in action sports apparel through the further expansion of our national presence and the establishment of multi-channel distribution."

Baio added that the purchase of the Modes Freedom stores would provide a bigger base from which to nationalise the company's brands as well as a stepping stone into the Quebec marketplace, while buying Board Zone would grow West's distribution to include online sales.

West will pay a total purchase price of approximately $9.37m for the Modes Freedom assets and approximately $1.43m for Board Zone.
West 49 Inc sells apparel, footwear and accessories, with an emphasis on skateboarding, snowboarding and surfing. The company currently operates 66 stores in seven provinces. It also owns young women's clothing retailer Off The Wall.
